Souvenir hunters - Flandern fields 1917

By: Michel van den Berghe

Awarded: Gold
Manufacturer: Roden, AlbY, Preiser, Revell, Airfix, Caesar Minia

Modifications:
All the figures are reworked, built up with pieces from different manufactures. Magic sculp did the rest. Horses are from Revell, cutting in sections and built up in a new pose with plastic and magic sculp. Skellets and dead soldiers are copies from originales afterwards changed and built up new. All figures are painted with Vallejo and oils. The Se 5a got PE pieces from PART and changed into a chrashed aeroplane. Painting was done with Tamiya, oil and some pigments.
Description:
Somewhere in " No Mans Land " of the flandern fields in the year 1917. A crashed fighter of the RAF has a great attraction for the soldiers and is also the chance to take his personal souvenir. Some german soldiers are gathered around the victim, some of curiosity, some to take a rest of the heavy fights during the days of the horrible war.

Though the main subject of the work is placed in the corner, the scene of horrible battlefield together with soldiers messing around corresponds to the title of the diorama. Dioramas with such concentration of details don’t need to have an object round which it is built up – such dioramas are the main objects themselves. Excellent level of details and coloration. Cinematographic quality, and nothing can added to this. One can spend hours of looking on muddy water, destroyed trees, etc. The airplane is well-built and realistically damaged. Painting is quite nice. The figures are also painted well with moderate shades and highlights which reflects the overall grim impression of the whole scene.

Perfect. There is nothing else I can say. The plane, the figures, the whole scene with all the little details, outstanding. I hope we'll see more works from you in the future as well.

Absolutely marvelous (and I’m not just saying that because I like airplanes : ) } This is a very advanced piece of work. My only points (and these are really nitpicking), might be that you’ve perhaps put a few too many items in such a small area, and it would have added a bit of realism to perhaps have a bit of a berm in front of the nose of the SE5, created from the A/C plowing in. The lack of it or any other scrapes makes it look a bit like the aircraft dropped straight down into place. Otherwise the models, figures, landscape and overall presentation are absolutely top notch, as is your attention to detail. Congratulations on a stunning piece of work.
